Car Insurance Requirements in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts state minimum coverage for car insurance is currently: $20,000 per person for Bodily Injury per person per accident, $40,000 bodily injury for all people per accident.
Finally the bare minimum for property damage liability $5,000. These low minims have created a situation where insurance carriers are losing money and consumers are paying too much for car insurance.
Maybe they (TPTB, Big Insurance, Massachusetts Lawmakers) want everyone shopping for car insurance every 6 months who carriers state minimums, who knows. Either way, they need to increase BI Limits to at least $50,000/$100,000 and property damage should be about $35,000 in Massachusetts.

There have been conversations in the legislator at Massachusetts proposing increasing these limits below which are completely outdated and have basically destroyed the cost of insurance in Massachusetts.
There are so many insurance situations involving a GEICO customer driving around hitting 3 cars with $5,000 in property damage to cover all vehicles.. It’s terrible because the people who cause the accidents typically have no assets so other Massachusetts drivers and insurance companies will the below carriers end up often times getting screwed.
$20,000 Bodily Injury Per Person per Accident.
$40,000 Bodily Injury for all Persons Per Accident.
Increase Massachusetts State Minimums for Car Insurance
Dear lawmakers in Massachusetts! Please raise the state minimum and start protecting the good people and residents in Massachusetts from terrible drivers that simply shouldn’t be on the road. If they are on the road they need to have property damage. While it’s true that car insurance in Boston(Especially Mattapan & Dorchester), Worcester, Springfield, Brockton, Malden, Framingham is really really expensive for young drivers, the price is a function of the behavior patterns of the drivers in these communities.
Too many young kids under 25 years old wake up, just get their license, buy a car and crash it. Then the insurance company’s profitability is upside down on the loss ratio and the next young driver to try to buy a new or used car in the city experiences higher rates and costs for insurance.
